earth hour 2009

I only heard this evening driving home, that tonight the entire world will be participating in Earth Hour 2009. It made me sad that I only heard about it now, and that it wasn't more insistently advertised, but even worse was the fact that for Earth Hour in 2008, our city was the only city recorded to have used more power than normal during the hour where our lights should have been turned off. H0w could we let that happen?

The video speaks a lot - I'm just one person, but so is the neighbor next door, and the girl working at Sobey's, and the guy parked at the red light. Together all of us 'one-persons' make a whole planet. We can't let being one person be an excuse to not do anything at all, we can't let that de-motivate our small actions towards healing our planet. If we don't care, there are millions of others who won't care. So if I don't do something, who will?

To be honest, I knew about Earth Hour last year, but I don't remember if we participated. So tonight we're making up for it by keeping all of our lights off for 2 hours (7:30-9:30pm). We've rented a movie to keep us both entertained (Hugh Jackman for me, Scarlett Johanson for him - haha) and I wanted to blog about it while we're sitting here at the tail end of 'dusk' with every single one of our lights off. A few candles will probably be lit, and I'm already really enjoying how quiet it is here in the dark, I can actually feel my body relaxing. I spend every hour awake in the light, whether natural light or not. I don't think that's good for our brains and visual sensory whatevers. When the sun went down hundreds of years ago, I don't think humans flipped a switch to bring the light back.

Happy Earth Hour, earth!!
